Sri Lanka repatriates 40 Iranian sailors from sanctioned tankers

Sri Lanka has coordinated the rescue and repatriation of 40 Iranian sailors who were stranded on commercial vessels in international waters near the island. The sailors, who were part of a group of crew members from 19 ships anchored approximately 24 nautical miles off the coast, were brought ashore at the Port of Galle to receive urgent medical treatment.

The rescue followed a request from the Iranian embassy through diplomatic channels. According to Sri Lankan Foreign Ministry spokesperson Thushara Rodrigo, the sailors were facing unspecified medical emergencies. Local media reports indicated that the vessels involved were oil tankers subject to United States sanctions, which have contributed to maritime disruptions and the stranding of Iranian shipping following a naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.

The sailors were transported to land using vessels arranged by the Iranian Embassy and local shipping agents. After receiving initial medical care, the crew members were repatriated to Tehran on Sunday morning. This humanitarian operation follows a previous incident in March involving the sinking of the Iranian warship IRIS Dena.
