Sri Lankan humanitarian response to Iranian tankers

Overview

The Frontline Socialist Party (FSP) initially urged the Sri Lankan government to seek regional aid for between 15 and 25 Iranian oil tankers stranded near Sri Lanka’s maritime zone. The party reported that these vessels were lacking essential supplies such as food, fuel, and drinking water due to tensions between Iran and the United States.

While government officials initially stated no official requests for assistance had been made, Sri Lankan authorities later provided medical aid to approximately 27 crew members from the tankers who had fallen ill. The Sri Lankan Navy transported the sailors to Galle port and subsequently to a private hospital in Colombo for treatment. Officials described the intervention as a “humanitarian obligation” amid ongoing international scrutiny of Iranian maritime transport.

Following a request from the Iranian embassy through diplomatic channels, Sri Lanka coordinated the rescue and repatriation of 40 Iranian sailors. The crew members, who were facing unspecified medical emergencies, were transported to the Port of Galle for treatment before being sent back to Iran. According to Sri Lankan Foreign Ministry spokesperson Thushara Rodrigo, the sailors were part of a group from 19 ships anchored approximately 24 nautical miles off the coast. The sailors were transported to land using vessels arranged by the Iranian Embassy and local shipping agents. After receiving initial medical care, the crew members were repatriated to Tehran on a Sunday morning. This operation follows a previous incident in March involving the sinking of the Iranian warship IRIS Dena.
