Nepal floods: Over 2,400 people missing after glacier burst

A massive flood disaster in Nepal, triggered by glacier and rock bursts in the Himalayan region, has left over 2,400 people missing. Rescue teams have recovered 586 bodies as of August 28.

The Nepal Disaster Management Authority has updated the missing persons list to include 933 employees from hydropower stations, as well as pilgrims and trekkers near the Mount Kailash border. The United States Geological Survey indicated that the disaster was caused by a surge of ice and mud from a glacier burst, which created large artificial lakes that subsequently breached.

While several countries, including India and China, offered specialized search and rescue teams, the Nepalese government declined direct foreign intervention for field operations. Instead, the government is accepting food, medical supplies, and financial aid. Officials stated that domestic security forces and local rescue teams are better equipped to handle the terrain and infrastructure damage, noting that managing foreign teams amidst broken roads and communication lines would create additional logistical burdens. This event is being described as the most severe disaster to hit Nepal since the 2015 earthquake.
