Sri Lankan Navy detains 11 Indian fishermen after boat runs aground

Eleven fishermen from Tamil Nadu's Rameswaram district were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy after their motorboat suffered a mechanical failure and ran aground near the island of Neduntheevu in Sri Lankan waters. The navy rescued the crew, impounded the vessel and transferred the fishermen to the Kayts magistrate court for further action.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay wrote to India's External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar seeking his personal intervention to secure the early release and repatriation of the fishermen and their boat. The Rameswaram fishing community also appealed to the Sri Lankan authorities for a goodwill repatriation without filing legal cases, emphasizing the livelihood impact on the local fishing sector.
