SS Rajamouli announces Varanasi scale and production details

SS Rajamouli Mahesh Babu Varanasi film Priyanka Chopra Jonas Indian cinema

Filmmaker SS Rajamouli has provided a major production update on his upcoming film, Varanasi, starring Mahesh Babu. Speaking at the 50th São Paulo International Film Festival in Brazil, Rajamouli stated that the project is five to six times larger in scale than his previous blockbuster, RRR.

Despite the increased scale, the production was completed more efficiently than RRR. While RRR required 315 shooting days, Varanasi wrapped in 275 days, a difference of 40 days attributed to extensive pre-production and paperwork.

The action-adventure drama follows an archaeologist, played by Mahesh Babu, and a historian, played by Priyanka Chopra Jonas, as they attempt to recover a cosmic artifact during a global crisis caused by an asteroid threatening the city of Varanasi. The film features international locations including Africa, Antarctica, and Europe, and includes Prithviraj Sukumaran as the antagonist. Varanasi is scheduled for a theatrical release on April 7, 2027.
