Production and release outlook for film Varanasi

Overview

Production for the film ‘Varanasi’, directed by S. S. Rajamouli and starring Mahesh Babu, is approaching its final stages. Producer S. S. Karthikeya previously indicated that shooting was expected to conclude shortly, with post-production slated for completion by January, targeting a worldwide theatrical and IMAX release on April 7, 2027.

Recent updates from producer S. S. Karthikeya confirm that shooting is expected to wrap up within days, with post-production progressing rapidly toward a January completion. At the 50th São Paulo International Film Festival, Rajamouli stated the project is “five to six times larger in scale” than his previous blockbuster, ‘RRR’. Despite this scale, the production was completed more efficiently than ‘RRR’, wrapping in 275 days compared to the 315 days required for his previous film.

The action-adventure drama follows an archaeologist, played by Mahesh Babu, and a historian, played by Priyanka Chopra Jonas, as they attempt to recover a cosmic artifact during a global crisis involving an asteroid threatening Varanasi. The film features international locations such as Africa, Antarctica, and Europe, with Prithviraj Sukumaran appearing as the antagonist.

While earlier speculation suggested potential release delays that might allow Prabhas’ film, ‘Fauzi’, to take the April slot, current production updates maintain the scheduled April 7, 2027, release date. Observers have previously noted a lack of significant global buzz compared to ‘RRR’, potentially due to a lack of released marketing material and a focus on international rather than domestic promotion.
