St. Georgi Hospital in Plovdiv raided over suspected insurance fraud

A large-scale specialized operation involving the Ministry of Interior, the Prosecutor's Office, the Regional Health Inspectorate, and the Executive Agency ‘Medical Supervision’ has targeted the St. Georgi University Hospital in Plovdiv, Bulgaria.

Law enforcement and forensic teams blocked entrances and exits at the hospital's first base. The investigation is focused on a suspected large-scale financial crime scheme involving the systemic draining of the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) through fictitious hospitalizations.

Police activity has been concentrated in the rheumatology and nephrology clinics. Officers have seized medical histories, financial reports, and other documentation. The operation has disrupted hospital functions, with many patients being turned away from scheduled appointments. Hospital administration has confirmed the heavy police presence but stated they have not yet been officially informed of the specific charges or details of the investigation.
