MLB umpire Doug Eddings faces scrutiny after rookie hat dispute
MLB umpire Doug Eddings is facing scrutiny after an incident during a game between the St. Louis Cardinals and Colorado Rockies that disrupted the Major League debut of Cardinals rookie pitcher Hancel Rincon. During the sixth inning, Eddings halted play to instruct Rincon to straighten his tilted cap, stating, “The kid’s not going to wear his hat like that on my field!”
Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol confronted Eddings over the directive, which he characterized as a “power-hungry move.” The confrontation resulted in a pitch clock violation and the subsequent ejection of Marmol. While Eddings claimed a Rockies hitter had complained about the cap, Rockies catcher Hunter Goodman denied making any such remark.
Major League Baseball reportedly informed Eddings that his actions went “too far.” In a show of solidarity, players from both teams wore tilted caps during the following game. Eddings later issued an apology to Rincon, who noted the exchange was not personal.
