Joshua Báez makes MLB history with three home runs in debut
Joshua Báez made Major League Baseball history during his debut with the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday, becoming the first player to hit three home runs in his first three career at-bats. The 23-year-old outfielder, called up from Triple-A Memphis, led the Cardinals to an 8-4 victory over the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field.
Báez’s historic performance came against Cubs starter Matthew Boyd. His first career at-bat resulted in a 449-foot, two-run home run on the very first pitch he saw. He followed this with a solo home run in the fourth inning and a two-run shot in the sixth. In total, Báez finished the game 3-for-4 with five RBIs.
Cardinals starter Michael McGreevy earned the win, pitching six innings and striking out six. Boyd took the loss, allowing seven runs on five hits in 5 1/3 innings. Other home runs for St. Louis were provided by Blaze Jordan and Alec Burleson, while Michael Conforto hit a three-run homer for the Cubs.
