St. Louise Children's Clinic suspends admissions after Enterobacter outbreak
A neonatal intensive care unit at the St. Louise Children's Clinic in Paderborn has suspended new admissions, accepting only emergencies, following an outbreak of Enterobacter bacterium infections. The St. Vincenz Kliniken reported that four premature infants have tested positive for the bacterium.
Two of the infants developed severe sepsis, one of whom died despite intensive medical treatment. A second infant was in critical condition but has since stabilized. The remaining two infants tested positive for the bacterium but currently show no symptoms. The clinic stated that the identified Enterobacter strain is not multi-resistant.
The facility has significantly expanded its hygiene and protection measures and is working with the local health department to identify the source and transmission routes of the infection.
