St Luke’s Anglican Church Canungra marks 90 years of service
St Luke’s Anglican Church in Canungra is celebrating 90 years of service to the community in 2026. The current Gothic-style building was dedicated on October 18, 1936, by the Archbishop of Brisbane, Dr. William Wand.
The church was established as a memorial to Noel Lahey, who was killed in action in France during World War I. The construction of the current site involved significant local contributions, including materials milled at the Lahey Corinda Sawmill, such as Beechmont rosewood walls and red cedar furniture. The building features red gum floors, Italian roofing tiles, and a bronze steeple containing a bell gifted by Mrs. R. M. Collins.
The church is currently listed on the Scenic Rim Council local Heritage Register. Its predecessor, the original church building, was moved to Boyland and renamed St Hilda’s.
