St Luke’s Anglican Church 90th anniversary

Overview

St Luke’s Anglican Church in Canungra is celebrating its 90th anniversary in 2026. The current Gothic-style building was dedicated on October 18, 1936, by the Archbishop of Brisbane, Dr. William Wand.

Anniversary festivities scheduled for the weekend of October 17–19 include an art show, bell ringing, a memorabilia display, and a fundraising Devonshire Tea on Saturday. Sunday’s program features a 10:00 am service, followed by speeches, morning tea, and the cutting of an anniversary cake. Reverend Helen Paget, who has served as pastor for three years, is leading the events alongside volunteers.

The church is an iconic landmark, noted as the most photographed building in the area and listed on the Scenic Rim Council local Heritage Register. Its history is tied to World War I; the Lahey family donated 50 pounds in memory of their son, Noel, who was killed in action in France. This donation was matched by others in the district.

The structure was built using local native timbers milled at the Lahey sawmill, including Beechmont rosewood walls, red cedar furniture, and rose gum or red gum hardwood floors. Other notable features include Italian roofing tiles and a bronze steeple containing a bell gifted by Mrs. R. M. Collins. The church’s predecessor was moved to Boyland and renamed St Hilda’s.
