Saint Marina (Ognjena Marija) Feast Marked by Serbian Orthodox Communities
On July 30 (July 17 old calendar) Serbian Orthodox believers across Serbia, North Macedonia and neighboring regions observe the feast of Saint Marina, popularly known as Ognjena Marija (“Fire Mary”). The saint, a 3rd‑century martyr from Antioch, is venerated as a protector of women, families and those suffering from storms. Her relics are kept in the monastery of Saint Marina on the Longa mountain above Lake Ohrid in the Albanian‑populated part of Macedonia.
Customs prohibit any work on the day – neither field labor nor household chores – and women traditionally set aside sharp objects. Folklore links thunder or lightning on the feast to a poor harvest or hardship, while clear skies are taken as a sign of prosperity. The saint is also invoked for protection against fire, floods and other calamities, and many attend the liturgy and light candles for health and safety.
