Overview

The Orthodox commemoration of Saint Marina continued through mid‑July, expanding in both scale and geography. On July 17 the feast was marked in Patras with a solemn divine liturgy at the historic Saint Marina church, followed by traditional dances, and two days later Brussels hosted a liturgy presided over by Metropolitan Athanagoras, noting the tonsure of a new monk. Reports from July 19 confirmed veneration of the saint’s icon in both cities.

Further east, Orthodox communities in Macedonia and Serbia observed the feast—known locally as Ognjena Marija—on July 30 (new calendar) or July 17 (old calendar). Celebrations centred on a monastery in the Mala Prespa region, where relics are kept and miracles reported; folklore links the saint to fire, protection of women and weather omens.

The observance extended into late July as Serbian Orthodox believers in Serbia, North Macedonia and neighboring areas marked the feast on July 30 (old calendar) with a liturgy at the Saint Marina monastery on Longa mountain above Lake Ohrid. Customs prohibited any work, women set aside sharp objects, and thunder or clear skies were interpreted as signs of future harvests. Candles were lit invoking Marina’s protection against fire, floods and illness.
