Stablecoin adoption grows through utility despite market fluctuations

Stablecoin adoption is shifting from speculative trading toward functional utility, even as broader cryptocurrency market values fluctuate. While the market has seen significant losses, the combined number of USDT and USDC holders grew by more than 14% to 240 million over the last year, suggesting that assets used for practical purposes like payroll, invoices, and cross-border transfers are gaining traction.

Gross stablecoin transfers increased significantly from an estimated $12 billion in Q1 2020 to $316 billion in Q1 2025. This growth highlights the use of stablecoins as an alternative payment rail when traditional systems are slow or expensive.

In the specific case of USDC, the circulating supply saw a $1.5 billion reduction between late June and August 6, reaching approximately $71.8 billion. Despite this drawdown, the issuer, Circle, reported $701 million in revenue for Q2 2026. USDC also experienced a massive surge in utility, processing $14.8 trillion in on-chain transaction volume during Q2 2026, representing a 151% increase year-over-year.
