Global stablecoin adoption and liquidity trends
Overview
Stablecoin usage is transitioning from speculative trading toward functional utility, such as payroll and cross-border transfers. Despite market fluctuations, the combined number of USDT and USDC holders grew by over 14% to 240 million in the past year. USDC specifically saw a massive surge in utility, processing $14.8 trillion in on-chain transaction volume during Q2 2026, a 151% year-over-year increase, even as its circulating supply decreased by $1.5 billion.
More recently, stablecoin liquidity on centralized exchanges has contracted significantly, falling from a peak of approximately $80 billion in late 2025 to roughly $64 billion. This $16 billion drain has led to a higher concentration of liquidity on Binance, which increased its market share of stablecoins from 60% to nearly 69%.
Market dynamics are showing a growing divergence between centralized and decentralized platforms. Decentralized exchange (DEX) market share reached a record 19.5% in July, following a 31.2% drop in centralized exchange (CEX) spot trading volume. While Bitcoin price volatility has historically triggered massive stablecoin inflows as investors seek safety, recent data suggests market participants are reacting less intensely to price drops, which may indicate a shift in investor sentiment or market maturity.
