Stablecoin providers hold nearly $200 billion in U.S. Treasury debt

Stablecoin providers currently hold nearly $200 billion in U.S. Treasury bills and other near-maturity securities. While these digital asset issuers represent a growing segment of short-term debt holders, they were not the primary drivers of recent massive increases in Treasury supply.

According to data from the U.S. Treasury Department, net Treasury bill supply rose by more than $550 billion during July and August, representing an 8% increase. During this period, money-market mutual funds absorbed approximately 85% of that additional supply.

Other significant buyers of Treasury bills in 2026 include the Federal Reserve, which has purchased more than $300 billion through September 22, and foreign investors, who saw a $38.8 billion increase in holdings in July. The Treasury noted that stablecoin reserves and money-market funds can overlap, as many stablecoin issuers invest their reserves through traditional money-market instruments and repurchase agreements.
