Stablecoin transfer volume reaches $891 billion in Q3 2026
Stablecoin transfer activity has accelerated significantly, reaching an adjusted quarterly volume of $891 billion in the third quarter of 2026. According to research from Coinbase and The Block, this represents more than a fourfold increase since early 2023, with activity averaging over $400 million per hour.
A key driver of this growth is the demand for continuous settlement. Approximately 73% of screened stablecoin transfer volume occurred outside of U.S. banking hours, including weekends and holidays, highlighting the utility of an “always-on” financial infrastructure.
Traditional financial institutions and payment networks are increasingly engaging with the sector. Seven of the ten largest U.S. banks have trialed stablecoins or tokenized deposits, while mid-market firms using stablecoins for cross-border business rose from 10% in 2024 to 30%. Major payment processors Visa and Mastercard are also expanding their presence, with Mastercard launching the Global Money Platform and Visa deploying stablecoin payouts through Visa Direct.
While stablecoin payments offer potential cost advantages—with one study noting a $200 USDC transfer on Base could be 86% cheaper than traditional services—challenges remain regarding the integration of blockchain-based settlement with legacy card networks and local currency conversion processes.
