Alex Kiprotich abducted by armed men in Kenya
Alex Kiprotich, an associate editor at Standard Group, was abducted by armed men on the Gilgil-Nakuru highway on Tuesday night. After being missing for approximately nine hours, he was found safe near Masinga Dam in Machakos County.
Standard Group CEO Chaacha Mwita stated that the incident appears to be a targeted attack intended to intimidate the media organization. The company noted that this is the second attempt on Kiprotich’s life in two months, following a June incident where a vehicle allegedly linked to the National Police Service’s Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau attempted to intercept him.
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua alleged the abduction was motivated by Kiprotich’s preparation of an investigative report regarding corruption in Mau Forest compensation funds. The Kenya Editors Guild and other media organizations have condemned the act, calling it an assault on press freedom and demanding an independent investigation.
The National Police Service has ordered an immediate probe into the incident, with its Anti-Abduction Unit actively investigating the identity of the armed individuals involved.
