Stanford Study Identifies Key Age Milestones at 34, 60 and 78 Years

Researchers at Stanford University School of Medicine analyzed blood plasma from 4,263 individuals aged 18 to 95, measuring 2,925 proteins. The study, published in Nature Medicine, found that protein levels change most sharply around three age windows – roughly 34, 60 and 78 years – indicating that biological aging proceeds in distinct phases rather than linearly.

A set of 373 proteins was shown to predict a person’s biological age within a few years of their chronological age. The patterns differ between men and women and many of the proteins that shift at the 60‑ and 78‑year peaks are linked to common age‑related conditions such as cardiovascular disease and Alzheimer’s. The findings could enable new biomarkers for early diagnosis and targeted interventions for age‑related illnesses.
