Stanisław Małkowski, Solidarity chaplain and opposition activist, dies at 82
Father Stanisław Małkowski, a prominent democratic opposition activist in the People's Republic of Poland and a chaplain for the Solidarity movement, has died at the age of 82. The Warsaw Archdiocese confirmed his passing, noting that funeral details will be announced at a later date.
Małkowski was a significant figure in the Polish resistance, having participated in the March 1968 strikes as a student at the University of Warsaw. He was a close collaborator and friend of Father Jerzy Popiełuszko, with whom he celebrated famous Masses for the Fatherland at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church in Żoliborz starting in 1982.
Throughout the 1970s, he worked with organizations such as the Committee for the Defense of Workers (KOR) and the Movement for the Defense of Human and Civil Rights. In 1975, he was a signatory of the Letter of 59 addressed to the Sejm of the PRL. In recognition of his pastoral work and his heroic stance as a Solidarity chaplain, he was awarded the Order of the White Eagle by President Andrzej Duda in 2021.
