Stanley Nwabali Returns to Chippa United Ahead of Nigeria Duty

Nigeria’s first‑choice goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has re‑joined South African Premier Division side Chippa United after a five‑month absence. The club announced his return on Saturday, ending weeks of speculation following the mutual termination of his contract in February.

Nwabali’s departure was linked to the deaths of three close family members – his grandmother, father and mother – which he needed time to grieve. His agent, Mohammed Lawal, said the goalkeeper left football to regain emotional stability, emphasizing that “happiness comes first.” Nwabali later explained that staying with Chippa United was “best for me” and that the club’s chairman had been supportive.

Former Super Eagles keeper Dele Aiyenugba welcomed the move, stressing that regular club minutes are crucial for Nwabali to remain match‑fit and retain the No. 1 spot ahead of Nigeria’s upcoming international fixtures. The goalkeeper aims to use the new season to reinforce his position with the national team under coach Eric Chelle.
