Stanley Nwabili returns to Chippa United, eyes Super Eagles recall
Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabili (30) has rejoined South African club Chippa United after mutually terminating his contract in February 2026. The former Nigeria first‑choice keeper helped the Super Eagles win silver at the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations and bronze at the 2025 edition.
Former Super Eagles and Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi said Nwabili’s ability remains "excellent, absolutely excellent" and that his exclusion from recent national‑team camps was due to his lack of club football, not a decline in form. Akpeyi added, "I wouldn't be surprised if he was Nigeria's No. 1 in the next few games."
Nwabili now competes with Maduka Okoye, Arthur Okonkwo and Francis Uzoho for the goalkeeper spot as head coach Eric Chelle prepares the squad for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualification campaign.
