Stanton battery storage facility enhances California grid resilience

Wellhead Electric Company has completed a battery energy storage facility in Stanton, California. The Stanton Battery Energy Storage System (SBES) features a 275.2 MWh capacity designed to capture excess renewable energy. The system is capable of powering 65,000 homes overnight and is projected to displace over 40,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide annually.

To manage the facility, a new Plant SCADA system was implemented to communicate with the Energy Management System (EMS), allowing for battery charge and discharge commands within milliseconds. The system monitors over 200,000 tags and 120,000 alarms across 28 containers, utilizing an AVEVA Historian to manage data at scale.

In the broader context of US grid reliability, distributed Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and microgrids are being utilized to mitigate vulnerabilities. In Indiana, utility NIPSCO faces scrutiny following power outages in Gary and has been identified by the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission as having the state’s highest rates and poorest reliability. Meanwhile, in California, legislative progress has been made on Senate Bill 492 to address the wildfire liabilities of major investor-owned utilities.
