US solar and energy storage expansion continues

Overview

The United States is seeing rapid expansion in solar and battery storage, driven by rising energy demands from expanding data centers. In the first half of 2026, solar and storage technologies accounted for 70% of all new capacity added. Preliminary estimates from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) suggest developers plan to add a record 86 GW of new large-scale generation capacity to the grid in 2026, with solar projected to represent 51% of those additions.

Between January 2025 and July 2026, renewables and battery storage expanded by 88.7 GW, significantly outpacing the 2.6 GW growth seen in fossil fuels and nuclear power. In the first seven months of 2026, renewable-generated electricity grew by nearly 11%, accounting for more than 29% of total U.S. electrical generation. This growth was led by utility-scale solar, which increased by 22.0%. During this period, coal-generated electricity fell by 10.2%.

The energy storage system (ESS) market reached a record 18.9 GWh of energy capacity deployments in the second quarter of 2026. While power capacity saw a slight year-over-year decrease, total energy capacity rose by 16% as the market shifted toward longer-duration battery systems. The average storage duration increased from 2.8 hours to 3.5 hours. This trend is supported by utility-scale installations and a 48% jump in residential energy capacity. Analysts project annual ESS installations could grow by more than 50% over the next five years as data centers seek rapid power solutions to bypass long lead times for new power plants and transmission lines.
