The Star Entertainment Group faces court decision on $400m lawsuit

The Star Entertainment Group, Australia’s largest listed casino company, awaits a Federal Court decision regarding a massive penalty for historical money-laundering violations. The financial intelligence agency AUSTRAC initiated legal action in 2022, seeking a $400 million penalty for what it described as “manifest failures” in anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism-financing controls.

The company has warned that any penalty exceeding $100 million could force it into liquidation. The court proceedings revealed that senior management failed to act on concerns regarding high-risk gamblers with known criminal links who funneled hundreds of millions of dollars through the casinos.

The Star operates locations in Sydney, Brisbane, and the Gold Coast. The company has recently undergone leadership changes following a rescue by US gaming giant Bally’s Corp in April 2025. Bally’s Corp chair Soo Kim, who now chairs The Star, stated during the annual general meeting that the company is entering a rebuilding phase.
