Star Entertainment money laundering legal proceedings
Overview
The Star Entertainment Group, Australia’s largest listed casino company, faced a Federal Court decision regarding a massive penalty for historical money-laundering violations. The legal action, initiated by AUSTRAC in 2022, sought a $400 million penalty for what was described as “manifest failures” in anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism-financing controls. The company had previously warned that any penalty exceeding $100 million could force it into liquidation. It was also previously saved from administration in 2025 by a $300 million rescue package led by Bally’s Corp chairman Soo Kim and the Mathieson family. On October 27, 2026, a Federal Court judge imposed a $260 million fine on Star Entertainment for contravening anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing laws. Justice Cameron Moore criticized the operator, stating, “In effect, Star put profit over compliance and did so on a large scale.” The court noted that the penalty was mitigated by the company’s remediation efforts and previous fines for overlapping conduct. The group has been granted 19 months to pay the fine in four equal instalments, with the first payment due within 28 days. Despite this installment plan, the scale of the fine poses an existential threat that could potentially lead the company into administration, as current profitability may not cover the cost. The company entered a trading halt on the ASX following the judgment. Following the ruling, it was clarified that the penalty is split between The Star Sydney (A$195 million) and The Star Gold Coast (A$65 million). The fine has triggered a review event in a credit agreement with WhiteHawk Capital Partners, a major lender. However, The Star stated it remains confident in its credit line and that the 19-month payment schedule will not affect its ability to continue operating as a going concern.
