Star Entertainment reports $8 million loss amid Sydney licence suspension
Australia's largest listed casino operator, Star Entertainment Group, posted an $8 million loss for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2026, an improvement over the $27 million loss reported a year earlier. Revenue fell 2% to A$265 million, driven mainly by soft gaming‑table and non‑gaming performance at its flagship The Star Sydney casino.
Since October 2024 the Sydney venue has been required to run mandatory carded play and a daily cash‑withdrawal limit of A$5,000, measures that have cut average daily revenue by about 20%. The New South Wales government said the cash limit will stay in place until August 2027, and the Sydney casino licence remains suspended. The Gold Coast casino’s licence suspension was deferred by the Queensland government to 30 September 2026, and the appointment of an external advisor for the Brisbane operation has been extended to that date. Star continues to address regulatory probes into possible anti‑money‑laundering and counter‑terrorism‑financing breaches that began in 2021. Shares were trading at 12 cents.
