Star Trek celebrates 60 years of science fiction history
The Star Trek franchise is celebrating its 60th anniversary, marking six decades since the original series debuted in 1966. The milestone highlights the enduring cultural impact of the science fiction saga, which includes various series and films featuring iconic characters such as Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock.
In Germany, the television station Kabel Eins commemorated the anniversary by dedicating an entire Sunday to the franchise. The marathon programming included several films from the original series era, such as ‘Star Trek: The Motion Picture’ (1979), ‘Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan’, ‘Star Trek III: The Search for Spock’, and ‘Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home’. ‘Star Trek: The Motion Picture’ drew an average of 0.14 million viewers, achieving a 7.4 percent market share during its early morning broadcast.
