Star Trek 60th anniversary celebrations

The Star Trek franchise is marking its 60th anniversary following the original series debut in September 1966. Created by Gene Roddenberry, the series initially faced challenges including high special effects costs and cancellation after three seasons, but it eventually became a massive cultural phenomenon through fan mobilization and social commentary.

Anniversary celebrations include global events such as film screenings, programs at the London Science Museum, and special digital content, with celebrations even extending to the International Space Station. The franchise has expanded to include 12 main series, 14 films, and over 100 video games. The milestone also highlights the influence of the series' speculative technology on real-world advancements, drawing parallels between fictional devices and modern mobile phones, tablets, and medical diagnostic tools.

In Germany, the television station Kabel Eins commemorated the milestone by dedicating an entire Sunday to the franchise. The marathon programming featured several films from the original era, including ‘Star Trek: The Motion Picture’ (1979), ‘Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan’, ‘Star Trek III: The Search for Spock’, and ‘Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home’. During its early morning broadcast, ‘Star Trek: The Motion Picture’ drew an average of 0.14 million viewers, representing a 7.4 percent market share.
