Star Wars to debut in IMAX 70mm film in 2027

Lucasfilm and Disney have announced that the Star Wars franchise will debut in IMAX 70mm film in 2027, marking the first time the series will be presented in this premium format.

As part of the franchise’s 50th anniversary, a newly restored version of the original 1977 film, later titled Star Wars: A New Hope, is scheduled for a theatrical re-release on February 19, 2027. This release will be available in select IMAX 70mm film locations as well as digital IMAX formats.

Following the anniversary re-release, the new standalone film Star Wars: Starfighter, directed by Shawn Levy and starring Ryan Gosling, will arrive in theaters on May 28, 2027. Unlike the original film, Starfighter was shot using IMAX-certified cameras and will be converted to IMAX 70mm film prints for select screenings. The film features a cast including Matt Smith, Mia Goth, and Amy Adams, following a character named Kade Auberon.
