Star Wars celebrates 50th anniversary with IMAX 70mm releases

Lucasfilm and The Walt Disney Company have announced a major theatrical program for 2027 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Star Wars franchise. As part of the milestone, the original 1977 film, ‘Star Wars: A New Hope’, will receive its first-ever IMAX presentation on February 19, 2027. This restored version will be shown in a limited number of IMAX 70mm film auditoriums and selected conventional theaters.

Additionally, the standalone film ‘Star Wars: Starfighter’ is scheduled to open in IMAX 70mm on May 28, 2027, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the original film’s premiere. Directed by Shawn Levy, the new project features Ryan Gosling as Kade Auberon, a rogue character navigating a high-stakes journey across the galaxy. The film was shot with IMAX-certified cameras and will be printed to 70mm IMAX stock for participating venues.
