StarkWare executes first quantum-resistant Bitcoin transaction
StarkWare has successfully executed the first quantum-resistant transaction on the Bitcoin mainnet. The experimental transaction was completed without requiring a soft fork or any modifications to the existing Bitcoin protocol or consensus rules.
To achieve this, researchers utilized a method known as signature grinding. This process involves a computational system generating over one million signature variants and selecting a specific mathematical form that does not reveal sensitive information associated with the sender's public key. This addresses the vulnerability window that occurs when a transaction sits in the mempool before being included in a block.
The transaction, involving 10,000 satoshis, was included in block #964,199, which was mined by MARA Pool via its Slipstream service. While the experiment does not provide a complete solution to the long-term threat posed by quantum computers to Bitcoin's elliptic curve cryptography, it demonstrates that users can implement an emergency exit to protect funds without altering the network's core rules.
