Starnav Elektra: Brazil's first hybrid PSV delivered for Petrobras charter

Starnav Serviços Marítimos has taken delivery of the Starnav Elektra, the first hybrid platform supply vessel (PSV) designed and built in Brazil. Constructed by Detroit Brasil at its Itajaí shipyard, the 5,500-dwt vessel is set to enter a long-term charter with Petrobras to support offshore logistics operations in Brazilian waters.

The vessel features a 1,322 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery system, which is installed on the main deck rather than in the hull to simplify maintenance and reduce risk. This hybrid configuration allows the ship to operate using fewer generators, thereby reducing fuel consumption, emissions, and engine maintenance cycles. The battery system is designed to meet dynamic positioning class 2 (DP2) requirements, enabling the vessel to maintain its position on battery power for up to 20 minutes in the event of a single engine failure.

The Starnav Elektra is the first in a planned series of up to 10 hybrid vessels, which will include six PSVs and four oil spill response vessels. The vessel is also designed to be compatible with renewable fuels, such as hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO).
