Three leaders of the military news outlet Stars and Stripes—publisher Max Lederer, editor-in-chief Erik Slavin, and Middle East reporter Lara Korte—have filed a federal lawsuit against the Pentagon and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth. The plaintiffs allege that their recent dismissals violate their First Amendment rights and constitute unlawful retaliation.

The journalists claim they were targeted for defending the outlet's editorial independence during a CBS News interview and for publishing a report on deteriorating conditions aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln. The Pentagon, which partially funds the publication, has cited insubordination as the reason for the terminations.

The lawsuit seeks to halt the dismissals and protect the outlet's historical mission of providing unbiased journalism to the military community. Lederer also noted that the Pentagon had installed an active-duty service member as a deputy publisher without his knowledge prior to his dismissal.
