State Audit Office President appeals to President over attacks by Péter Magyar

State Audit Office constitutional independence campaign financing investigation checks and balances political conflict

László Windisch, the President of the State Audit Office (ÁSZ), has formally appealed to the President of the Republic, András Baka, regarding repeated attacks by Péter Magyar against the institution. Windisch argues that Magyar’s criticisms have moved beyond natural political conflict and now threaten the constitutional independence and autonomy of the auditing body.

In recent weeks, Magyar has accused the ÁSZ of assisting in illegal party financing and the misappropriation of funds from MNB foundations. Windisch dismissed these claims as baseless, noting that the ÁSZ was actually the entity that uncovered the MNB foundation issues and filed a report in January 2025.

Regarding the ongoing campaign financing investigation, the ÁSZ maintains that the process is being conducted in accordance with legal requirements and includes the NKA case. Windisch emphasized that the office relies solely on verified facts and legislation rather than political opinion or public sentiment, calling for the protection of the separation of powers.
