Hungarian State Audit Office independence dispute
Overview
The State Audit Office of Hungary (ÁSZ) has issued a formal rebuttal to allegations made by Péter Magyar concerning the organization’s independence. Magyar had suggested on social media that the ÁSZ might be protecting the Fidesz party, drawing parallels to previous controversies involving the Hungarian National Bank (MNB) foundations.
The ÁSZ asserted that it functions as an “independent constitutional body” and does not follow instructions from the Prime Minister. The office characterized Magyar’s claims regarding party financing as false and confirmed that investigations into campaign financing for both Fidesz and the Tisza Party are proceeding as planned. The ÁSZ further noted that a relevant ministry has failed to provide necessary data for these investigations despite multiple requests.
In response to escalating tensions, ÁSZ President László Windisch has formally appealed to the President of the Republic, András Baka. Windisch argued that Magyar’s criticisms have moved beyond “natural political conflict” and now threaten the constitutional independence and autonomy of the auditing body.
Addressing the specific accusations regarding the misappropriation of MNB foundation funds, Windisch dismissed the claims as baseless, noting that the ÁSZ was the entity that originally uncovered the MNB foundation issues and filed a report in January 2025. Windisch emphasized that the ongoing campaign financing investigation, which includes the NKA case, relies solely on verified facts and legislation to protect the separation of powers.
