Vietnam State Bank mandates interest rate reductions

The State Bank of Vietnam (SBV) has issued an urgent directive requiring commercial banks to implement substantive reductions in both deposit and lending interest rates. Under official document 9736/NHNN-CSTT, banks must reduce average deposit rates for terms of six months or longer by at least 0.5% per year compared to rates reported between October 11 and October 20, 2026.

To ensure compliance, the SBV will monitor interest rate data through statistical reporting systems. Banks that fail to follow these instructions may face strict penalties, including the reduction or lowering of credit growth quotas.

In response to the directive, several commercial banks have already announced adjustments. VIB has launched a 15 trillion VND credit package for priority sectors with interest rate reductions of up to 1.5% per year. Sacombank has introduced a 20 trillion VND preferential credit package for individual customers, offering rate reductions between 1.5% and 2% per year. Techcombank has also announced credit programs totaling 40 trillion VND, with lending rate reductions of up to 2% per year for businesses in production and commerce.
