Vietnamese banks cut interest rates following State Bank directive

Following a directive from the State Bank of Vietnam (SBV), numerous commercial banks are implementing widespread reductions in both deposit and lending interest rates to support economic growth and reduce financial pressure on businesses and citizens.

The SBV has instructed credit institutions to reduce listed deposit interest rates by at least 0.5% per year for terms of six months or longer. Additionally, banks are encouraged to reduce lending rates for production, business, and priority sectors by 1.5% to 2% per year. The regulator also emphasized that banks must avoid unhealthy competition in raising deposit rates and must ensure that credit expansion does not compromise credit quality or lower lending standards.

Major banks have already announced adjustments. Vietcombank and VietinBank have lowered deposit rates for terms of six months and above. LPBank and VietBank have also adjusted their rates, with LPBank reducing lending rates by up to 2% for new short-term business disbursements. MB has implemented a 1.5% reduction for five priority sectors, with some cases seeing up to 2% cuts. Other institutions, including BIDV, Agribank, HDBank, and Nam A Bank, are also rolling out preferential credit packages or significant rate reductions to assist the economy during the final months of the year.
