State Farm issues record $5 billion dividend to auto policyholders

State Farm has begun distributing a record $5 billion dividend to its auto insurance policyholders. This one-time cash-back payout covers eligible policies for more than 49 million vehicles.

To qualify, customers must have had an active State Farm Mutual personal auto insurance policy at any point during 2025. The dividend amount is calculated as a percentage of the premium paid for each qualifying policy, ranging from 4% to 10% depending on the state. While the average payment is approximately $100 per vehicle, exact amounts vary by individual premium levels.

Distributions are being released in waves based on the state assigned to the customer's policy, a process expected to continue over several months. Millions of customers have already received payments. Those with an email on file will receive instructions via a dedicated portal to choose between digital methods like Zelle, Venmo, or PayPal, or a physical check. Customers without an email on file will automatically receive a check by mail.

The massive payout follows a strong financial year for the insurer, which reported a company-wide net income of $12.9 billion in 2025. This turnaround is attributed to a combination of fewer claims and stabilized insurance rates after a period of steep national increases.
