State Farm begins $5 billion dividend payout to auto policyholders

State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company has begun distributing a $5 billion cash-back dividend to millions of qualifying auto insurance policyholders. This represents the largest dividend in the company’s history of over 100 years. The payout is driven by the insurer’s financial strength and a significant turnaround in its auto underwriting performance in 2025, which saw a $4.6 billion underwriting gain compared to a $2.7 billion loss in 2024.

To qualify, customers must have had an active State Farm Mutual personal auto policy at any point during 2025 and received a calculated dividend of at least $10. The dividend is distributed across more than 49 million vehicles, with an estimated average payout of approximately $100 per vehicle. Because State Farm is a mutual company owned by its policyholders rather than shareholders, it is able to return value directly to its customers.

Individual payment amounts vary based on the state and the amount of premium paid, ranging from 4% to 10% of the 2025 premium. In Louisiana, for example, the company is issuing $136 million in dividends to local drivers. Distribution is occurring in waves by state and is expected to take several months. Eligible customers can receive payments via digital methods or physical checks and will be notified through official communications from the company or its distribution provider, Veritas.
