State of Mexico advances forest restoration and fire‑prevention program

The State of Mexico’s Protectora de Bosques (Probosque) prepared terrain for the Hydrological‑Forest Restoration 2026 initiative in the La Cañada area of Temoaya. Workers, technical staff and residents built stone terraces, opened seed beds and installed the Probosque system to improve rainwater infiltration, reduce erosion and aid aquifer recharge. Director Alejandro Sánchez Vélez said the effort “highlights the integrated participation of agrarian forest groups, municipalities, schools and Probosque staff,” marking a shift from traditional reforestation to comprehensive watershed restoration.

Probosque also concluded its 2025‑2026 silvicultural campaign, creating 582.6 km of firebreaks, 97.43 km of “black lines” to limit fire spread, and conducting controlled burns on 551.69 ha. Additional measures included pruning, soil protection works, road maintenance and the construction of infiltration wells. Community members, ejidatarios and brigades participated in the closing ceremony in San Mateo de los Ranchos, Temascaltepec, reaffirming the program’s role in reducing fire risk and protecting water resources.
