State of Mexico clamps down on illegal logging and boosts pulque agave industry

Federal environmental prosecutor Profepa, together with the CFE, the Guard, the Army, the state police and other agencies, dismantled 40 illegal electricity connections feeding 16 clandestine sawmills in the Ocuilan municipality of the State of Mexico. The operation removed about 500 metres of three‑phase cable, disabling facilities that processed illegally harvested timber from the Bosque de Agua area.

At the close of the 2026 Forest Week, the State of Mexico government and Probosque hosted the first Regional Forum on Pulque Agave, bringing together producers, researchers and officials from the State of Mexico and Tlaxcala. Participants examined commercialisation, legal frameworks and value‑adding for the culturally important maguey pulquero, noting the state’s 1,193 hectares of cultivated agave across 49 municipalities – roughly one million plants – and launched a Hydrological‑Forest Restoration campaign.

The dual actions aim to curb illegal forest exploitation while promoting sustainable agave cultivation and the regional pulque denomination.
