State of Mexico rolls out forest education and agave cultivation programs

As part of the Semana de los Bosques, the State of Mexico government, through the Protectora de Bosques (Probosque), held a forest education and culture day for students from Texcaltitlán, Temoaya, Nicolás Romero and Ixtlahuaca. Guided tours and hands‑on activities taught the importance of forests for water production, pollination, biodiversity, soil protection and climate mitigation, as well as fire prevention and restoration. Director General Alejandro Santiago Sánchez Vélez emphasized that “protecting these areas and raising forest awareness is essential.”

During the same week, Probosque organized a training session on sustainable cultivation of Agave salmiana for pulque production. Producers, technicians and students learned about erosion control, soil fertility, water infiltration and the agro‑forestry benefits of the traditional Metepantle system. Alejandro Sánchez Vélez said Probosque “is the main ally; we will provide quality plants from our nurseries for commercial planting.” The initiatives aim to revive traditional knowledge, support rural development and conserve ecosystems.
