State Theatre in Melbourne reopens after major renovation

The State Theatre in Melbourne is set to reopen this Saturday following a major renovation. The project, which began in March 2024, was completed six months ahead of schedule and within its budget.

Led by NH Architecture and the Norwegian firm Snøhetta, the refurbishment focused on preserving the venue’s historic aesthetic, including its crimson and gold color scheme, brass fittings, and the original hand-painted curtain. Key functional updates include replacing aisle carpeting with timber flooring to improve acoustics for resident companies such as The Australian Ballet and Opera Australia.

The renovation is part of the Victorian government’s Melbourne Arts Precinct Transformation project. While the total cost remains undisclosed, the project received a $15 million donation from the Ian Potter Foundation.
