Stefan Govindraju faces fraud charges in Tembisa Hospital corruption case
Stefan Joel Govindraju, a 37-year-old medical doctor and businessman, appeared in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court facing 70 counts of fraud, theft, money laundering, and corruption. He is alleged to be the mastermind behind a procurement syndicate involving approximately R600 million in contracts at Tembisa Hospital between 2020 and 2023.
The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has linked Govindraju to a network of 75 companies and 1,237 contracts. Investigators claim the scheme utilized competitive-looking bids supported by cover quotes from linked companies and the use of false or non-compliant documents to bypass procurement checks. Additionally, it is alleged that R100 million in bribes were paid to hospital officials.
Govindraju was arrested at O. R. Tambo International Airport following a trip to the Seychelles. He was released on R200,000 bail, with the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) not opposing the application due to ongoing plea negotiations. As part of these negotiations, Govindraju has voluntarily surrendered properties to the NPA’s Asset Forfeiture Unit. The court proceedings have been postponed until next year.
