Stefan Quandt's €500,000 Donation Boosts Ebola Relief in DR Congo

A month after the Ebola outbreak was officially confirmed in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the humanitarian organization action medeor has intensified its response in the Ituri province’s capital, Bunia. The effort was made possible by a €500,000 donation from German entrepreneur Stefan Quandt, which the charity says “was decisive” for expanding the supply of protective suits, masks, gloves, disinfectants, thermometer devices and hand‑washing stations.

Action medeor reported more than 950 confirmed infections and roughly 250 deaths in the region. About 60 health‑care workers are currently ill, and a doctor has already died. Dr. Joseph Kasanda, coordinating the aid on the ground, described the situation as one of “pure fear” among residents and overburdened burial teams. The organization plans to further strengthen health stations, improve infection control and launch community‑awareness campaigns to contain the epidemic.
