Stelios Ramfos, prominent Greek philosopher and author, dies at 87
Renowned Greek philosopher and author Stelios Ramfos has died at the age of 87. Born in Athens in 1939, Ramfos studied law at the University of Athens before moving to Paris in 1965 to study philosophy at the University of Vincennes (now Paris 8), where he taught from 1969 to 1974.
Ramfos was a prolific intellectual with over 30 books to his credit. His work explored the complex intersections of Greek identity, the legacies of Byzantium, Orthodox Christian tradition, and modern European thought. He was known for his active participation in public debate, often addressing topics such as Marxism, social psychology, and the relationship between the individual and the collective.
His funeral was held at the Holy Church of Agios Panteleimon in Chalandri and was conducted at public expense by decision of the Greek ministries of Finance and Interior. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis described his passing as a ‘national loss,’ honoring Ramfos as a brilliant thinker and a personal friend who valued logic and individual responsibility over dogmatic ideologies.
