Death of Greek philosopher Stelios Ramfos

Overview

Stelios Ramfos, a prominent Greek philosopher, author, and public intellectual, has died at the age of 87. His work focused on the intersections of Greek identity, Byzantine legacy, Orthodox Christian tradition, and modern Western thought. Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis characterized his death as a ‘national loss,’ honoring Ramfos as a brilliant thinker and a personal friend who valued logic and individual responsibility over dogmatic ideologies.

Born in Athens in 1939, Ramfos studied law at the University of Athens before moving to Paris in 1965 to study philosophy at the University of Vincennes, where he taught from 1969 to 1974. A prolific intellectual with over 30 books, his work also addressed Marxism, social psychology, and the relationship between the individual and the collective.

Following his passing, the newspaper Capital.gr republished Ramfos’s philosophical reflections regarding the nature of history. In these writings, he distinguished between history as conscious human existence within time and historiography as the study of those events, arguing that animals lack history because they cannot connect events into shared meaning.

His funeral was held at the Holy Church of Agios Panteleimon in Chalandri and was conducted at public expense by decision of the Greek ministries of Finance and Interior.
