Eindhoven University students unveil world's first solar-powered ambulance

A team of 23 students from the Eindhoven University of Technology has unveiled Stella Juva, a prototype for the world’s first solar-powered ambulance. Designed as an autonomous mobile clinic, the vehicle aims to serve remote regions lacking reliable electricity, fuel, or road infrastructure.

Unlike traditional high-speed ambulances, Stella Juva is built for off-road capability and medical stability. It utilizes advanced ‘All Back Contact’ solar panels manufactured by AIKO, which maximize sunlight capture by moving electrical contacts to the rear of the cells. The vehicle features a lightweight carbon fiber chassis, weighing 1,350 kg, and can reach speeds of 120 km/h with a daily range of up to 715 km in sunny conditions.

The electrical architecture separates the driving system from the medical cabin to ensure that even if propulsion power is depleted, energy remains available for life-saving equipment. The interior functions as a mobile emergency room, equipped with X-ray machines, ultrasound for prenatal care, malaria rapid tests, and an automated external defibrillator (AED). The team plans to conduct field testing in Kenya in collaboration with the non-profit Amref Health Africa to evaluate its performance in rugged, real-world environments.
